The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announce in a statement that their newborn princess is called Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton announce the name of their newborn baby girl. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge call their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, which includes a tribute to Prince William's late mother Princess Diana.
"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana," Kensington Palace said in a statement. "The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge."
While Diana is clearly a nod to her late paternal grandmother, Elizabeth refers to the queen's name while Charlotte is the middle name of the Duchess' sister Pippa Middleton and the name of the Duke's cousin Lady Charlotte. It's also the feminine form of Charles, Prince of Wales.
Princess Charlotte was born Saturday, April 2 at St Mary's Hospital. She is now fourth in line to the British throne, behind her grandfather Prince Charles, her father Prince William, and her brother Prince George. She bumps her uncle Prince Harry down to fifth in line.
The little princess was introduced to the world Sunday by the Duke and Duchess on the steps of the hospital. She slept soundly in her mother's arms through her debut. The next time she will be seen by public reportedly will be at her christening in early fall.
