Gospel Movies: Setting The Pace In Healthy Content


Gospel movies have gradually made their way into most homes in Nigeria unlike it used to be, SAMUEL ABULUDE looks at the lofty and giant strides made by the gospel movie industry and the challenges faced by its promoters.

Before the advent of gospel soapoperas on television and home videos, the film industry widely accepted to have been pioneered by the late Hubert Ogunde had the trappings of religious teaching. This is because most of the creative talents then and now discovered their talents while acting, singing and performing in churches and special events. It is on record that Hubert Ogunde, who inspired many, had his first play in the Cherubim and Seraphim church. 

Our diverse culture cum tradition and religious inclinations helped to shape our beliefs. Great productions like ‘Aropin’ ‘T’Eniyan’, ‘Ayan Mo’, ‘Aiye’, among others inspired many particularly from the South-western part of the country. Their stories often reinforced God’s ultimate power over witchcraft, voodoo and wickedness of man. From this foundation came drama ministries from churches whose central theme is the superiority of the power of Jesus Christ over demons, witches and familiar spirit.
