After the nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards were unveiled on early Thursday, January 14, the nominees quickly reacted to the honor. Jennifer Lawrence (Best Actress, "Joy"), who may repeat her Golden Globe victory at the upcoming ceremony, said, "I am beyond grateful and humbled by this nomination. I feel incredibly honored to be recognized among the other amazing women in this category."
The movie marks the third time Lawrence worked with director David O. Russell. She added, "For me, working with David O. Russell has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I share this nomination with him as well as our incredible supporting cast. I could not be more proud to be a part of this film and thankful to the producers and Fox for their unyielding support. "
Russell, however, wasn't nominated in the Directing category. Weighing in on the snub, Lawrence said, "This certainly doesn't drive him. He's not petty." She noted though, "Everyone worked on the film just as hard for me. And it's such a personal movie for David."
Leonardo DiCaprio, who also grabbed a prize at the Golden Globes last weekend, was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars. "The Revenant" star said, "I am so grateful to the Academy for their recognition of this film. Making 'The Revenant' was one of the most rewarding and collaborative experiences of my life. None of this would have been possible without Alejandro's talent, vision and determination. Our dedicated crew also deserves to share in this moment. Together, they have created a truly unique cinematic experience. Congratulations to all of my fellow nominees this season. Thank you to the Academy."
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu himself was nominated for his work on "The Revenant". He shared his excitement, "I am in London and just heard the good news! We gave it our all on this film and this appreciation from the Academy means a lot to me and my colleagues who made it possible. Champagne and Mezcal will run tonight!"
Rooney Mara (Best Supporting Actress, "Carol") commented on the honor, "To be acknowledged this morning along with Cate, Phyllis, Ed, Carter and Sandy is an incredible honor. Todd made a beautiful and quiet love story with Carol. I am proud to have been a part of it and feel privileged to have worked with some of our finest artists and one of our greatest directors."
Brie Larson (Best Actress, "Room"), meanwhile, tweeted a picture of the movie's crew along with a message which read, "Thank you @TheAcademy for recognizing @RoomTheMovie, @EDonoghueWriter, @lennyabrahamson and Me! We are overjoyed!!!!"
Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar for Best Actor last year, may repeat the success this year following his lauded performance as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in "The Danish Girl". The actor said, "I'm incredibly grateful to the Academy for this nomination - particularly in a year with so many brilliant films and performances. This nomination is a testament to the vision of our fearless director Tom Hooper, and the support of my fellow cast members, especially the incandescent Alicia Vikander."
He added, "Being recognised for THE DANISH GIRL is particularly special to me; if sharing Lili and Gerda's journey and their love story can in any small way be a part of positive social change - then I will be even more grateful."
Having won a Golden Globe for his role in "Creed", Best Supporting Actor nominee Sylvester Stallone felt "incredibly humbled by this honor." He added, "I was not expecting it ... especially at this time in my life. I am certainly grateful to the artists and collaborators who helped make it possible."
Sam Smith couldn't hide his excitement for being nominated for Best Original Song for his "Spectre" song, "Writing's on the Wall". "This is my Oscar Nomination face. Unreal. Freaking out. Thank you Academy - Thank You Thank You Thank You," he wrote in a caption of an Instagram picture.
The announcement for the Oscar nominees also started talks about the films, actors and filmmakers who were not included in the race this year. Among the major snubs were "Bridge of Spies" helmer Steven Spielberg, "The Hateful Eight" director and writer Quentin Tarantino, "Woman in Gold" actress Helen Mirren as well as the huge blockbuster movie "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".
A fan of the sci-fi movie saga, Neil Patrick Harris took to Twitter to comment on the snub. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens not being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar is horse s**t," he wrote
