Director Kevin Tancharoen Drops Out of 'Mortal Kombat' Movie


The 'Mortal Kombat: Legacy' creator leaves the reboot project 'to move on to other creative opportunities.'




"Mortal Kombat" movie has just lost its director. Kevin Tancharoen who was initially hired to helm the project announced his departure on Twitter over the weekend. "After 3 years of Kombat, I've decided to move on to other creative opportunities. I wish everyone involved in the movie big success," he wrote.

The first "Mortal Kombat" movie, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, was released in 1995 and raked in $122 million worldwide. Its sequel "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation", directed by John R. Leonetti, came out in 1997 and grossed an estimated $51.3 million worldwide.

Based on Midway's popular 1992 video game, "Mortal Kombat" tells the story of the best fighters from around the globe who are summoned to an island to compete in a tournament with an outcome which will determine the fate of the entire planet.

Tancharoen signed a deal with New Line/Warner Bros. in 2011 to reboot the movie after he created the successful web series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy".
