Maggie Smith Receives Honor From Queen Elizabeth II

The veteran actress, who plays Professor McGonagall in 'Harry Potter' movies, is made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honor.


Maggie Smith has received one of Britain's highest honors. On Friday, October 17, she was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honor during an investiture at Windsor Castle. The actress, who portrays Dowager Countess of Grantham on "Downton Abbey", received the honor for her contribution to theater, cinema and television for 60 years. 

Companions of Honor is awarded to very few people. The Professor McGonagall depicter in "Harry Potter" movies joins other 46 honorees which include physicist Stephen Hawking, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and painter David Hockney. 

Smith earned six Oscar nominations and won two. She was first nominated for best supporting actress in 1965 for her performance in "Othello". The two trophies were handed to her for her roles in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and "California Suite". 

Smith was recently seen in "My Old Lady" alongside Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas and Dominique Pinon. Directed by Israel Horovitz, the drama comedy tells the story of a New Yorker (Kline) who inherits an apartment in Paris only to find an old lady (Smith) living in the unit.
