Critics: Ebola appointment latest in missteps by officials

President Obama's decision to name a skilled political operative as his Ebola czar rather than a medical expert is enraging critics as the latest in a series of missteps in the government's response to the virus.

The White House touted Ron Klain's "extensive managerial experience" as a key credential for the post. Klain's résumé includes serving as chief of staff to Vice Presidents Gore and Biden. The White House noted Klain also took the lead role in implementing the Recovery Act, the massive government spending effort to revive the economy amid the recession.

That didn't assuage Sen. John McCain, who blasted Klain, 53, as a "Democratic apparatchik" with no qualifications to deal with a public health crisis.

"He has no experience or knowledge or background in medicine," McCain, the Arizona Republican who lost the 2008 presidential race to Obama, told Fox News.
